7. Alma (FEAR)

The FEAR franchise is one of the godfathers of the darkness-probing Did-I-just-see-that?! response. Supplying you with enough firepower to take down the frequent groups of mercenaries that were around every few corners was one side of a very dark coin, with the other being the element of the supernatural and the tale of Alma herself. Yet another lab-experiment-gone-wrong, this tale was done justice by way of many diary entries that could be found throughout the game, alongside showing Alma in various stages of her life as creepy visions and flashes throughout. Also inbuilt was the games penchant for throwing a random macabre image directly in your face, accompanied by a spiking sound effect. These images were on a random timer, and often coincided with just clearing a group of enemies, or getting away from a particularly attention-clamouring demon, only for the game to get you with a jump-scare after all.
