11 Terrifyingly Iconic Horror Video Game Characters

6. Necromorphs (Dead Space)

Over to a group of enemies for this one, and the collective term for the sometimes-lumbering, often-lunging creatures of the Dead Space universe. When EA touted the gameplay mechanic of €˜Strategic Dismemberment€™ it had potential to either lean too far into the aisles of hyperbolic PR, or as it turned out, actually be a revolutionary gameplay mechanic. For decades the horror staple of €œAim for the head!€ had also transferred across to the gaming realm, yet now the only way to take down the advancing abominations was to sever their legs or arms, of which they had multiple. Oh and did I mention said arms are often bladed, or are lashing at you in a whip-like fashion? Good luck with that. Dead Space remains (forgetting the third instalment) a superbly crafted slice of deep-space entertainment, moving along at the perfect pace that delivers jump-scares and disturbing imagery in equal measure.
