11 Times Video Game DLC Lost Its Mind
2. Metal Gear Survive - Save Slots
Metal Gear Survive was dead on arrival. Fans didn’t want it, people unfamiliar with the franchise didn’t know about it, and the game experienced terrible marketing.
When it did reach public hands, the reception wasn’t great and fans reacted poorly to dumbing down the Metal Gear franchise to a simple zombie survival game. It lacked the tone, originality and charm of the franchise.
Then it continued to dig its own grave.
Konami decided, in a twisted turn of events, that it was to charge players for additional character slots. Basically, the game was charging you for an extra save slot.
No doubt this bought uproar from a community, as a feature which should be included in all games was locked behind a paywall. Now, while the save slot itself wasn’t directly linked to a monetary value, it used the in-game currency system which could be purchased with hard-earned cash.
Daily logins would provide coins - but they were worth pennies. Coupled with the fact that to purchase a slot it would cost 1,000 of these is downright disgusting.
Metal Gear Survive was not a well-received game, but this was the final nail in the coffin and ultimately, confirmed its death.
