12 Best Video Game Comebacks Of All Time
3. Doomguy - DOOM (2016)
Wasn't it obvious that he was going to turn up?
The modern iterations of DOOM and Wolfenstein are almost like two sides of the same coin. Whereas MachineGames decided to flesh out the story of their protagonist and double down on world building, Id Software decided to double down on...absolutely none of that, and in the best goddamn way possible.
There's a great moment right at the beginning of DOOM that sets the tone of the game perfectly. After Doomguy has left his sarcophagus, he approaches a screen that has Samuel Hayden addressing him, giving a bit of story exposition regarding the situation on Mars and Doomguy, without thought, rips the screen from the wall and casts it aside.
That's Id Software letting you know: this game ain't about story. We don't care about nuance. We care about moving fast, fighting fast, big f***ing guns, shooting demons with big f***ing guns, tearing demons apart with your bare hands and heavy metal.
Everything about DOOM was perfect, it encapsulated everything that made the originals great and also included a hell of a lot of stuff that modern first person shooters could really stand to learn from. As Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin put it: "DOOM is junk food, and we're proud of that."
