12 Best Video Game Comebacks Of All Time
6. B.J. Blazkowicz - Wolfenstein: The New Order
When Wolfenstein 3D was first released it went on to be known as a precursors to modern first person shooters. Id Software established almost all of the core mechanics that make up the genre as it currently stands.
So why on earth is B.J. on this list if his game didn't suck harder than Sherlock? Well because back in the nineties the plot of Wolfenstein was somewhat...non-existent. It amounted to: there are Nazis, there are guns, you have those guns, shoot the Nazis with the guns you have. There's a couple of extra things, but that's the gist. Not Id's fault, it was tough getting subtle narrative beats across back then.
However, when Wolfenstein: The New Order came out we were treated to a far deeper story overall and a much more nuanced take on the character of B.J. (which is a really difficult sentence to write considering the dude's name).
This version saw B.J. as an emotionally fragile, empathetic man. We got glimpses of his troubled, abusive childhood and crippling PTSD throughout that really helped flesh him out as a character and, if anything, made him more iconic than he already was.
And, yes, he also had lots of really cool guns and killed tons of Nazis with them.
