December's wretched Monster Hunter movie may have caused Capcom's franchise to end 2020 with all the grace and dignity of a drunken uncle bellowing racial slurs across the dinner table, but at least it started the year in fine form.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is the expansion pack to the original Monster Hunter World, the 2019 game that saw the then-fifteen year old series finally reach mainstream acceptance in the west.

By sanding off the rough edges and busywork of previous entries, World finally allowed gamers outside Monster Hunter's masochistic subculture to appreciate Capcom's kaiju-slaying simulator. (Without the controller-smashing frustration that previously typified the series).

Iceborne continued the good work started by its parent game, offering a host of quality of life improvements such as more convenient crafting, improved difficulty scaling and actually being able to pet your cat.

These improvements came alongside a new, artic-themed area that included all-new monsters to hunt (would've been a bit of a misnomer if Capcom had forgotten those), and a story that revolved around the island's already battered ecosystem taking a further pounding from a pissed off ice dragon.

Which proved eerily prophetic for 2020. No matter how bad things looked at the start, there was always something worse lurking around the corner...
