2. Her Story
Speaking of unique games, Her Story is the latest critically-revered indie darling to light a fire under the 'Is it really a game?' debate. Don't worry about that for now though, just think of this fantastically-written murder-mystery as one that'll put you in the grizzled shoes of your favourite detective, forcing you to take notes, brew some coffee to figure it all out - and ultimately come to a conclusion that's as satisfying as you want it to be, before you decide to turn it all off for the night, burning with desire to discover more the next day. All taking place on one fake computer screen from the 90s, you're tasked with thumbing through various files pertaining to a woman who's being accused of killing someone named 'Simon', except everything thereafter is up to your interpretation. The woman in question is played by actress Viva Seifert (all the clips are live-action), and it's her performance that really brings everything together, although in the handful of hours you'll spend embroiled in this case, she'll convince you of one thing just as another facial tick or body movement makes you doubt something else. Is it a game? What do you actually do? Well, you play it, and the rest is up to you - the only guarantee is you'll come away from this tale with one of your own to talk about with any who'll listen.
