12 Hugely Delayed Video Games (That Ended Up Sucking)
8. Gran Turismo 5
The Delay: Where do we even begin? Gran Turismo 4 was released in 2005, and going by usual developmental cycles, it was expected that Gran Turismo 5 would come out in 2008 or 2009 at a stretch. The game unsurprisingly no-showed the PS3 launch, and it wasn't until 2009 that we heard anymore about the game. Release date rumours abounded constantly until the game was penciled in for March 2010, a release date it subsequent missed, ultimately being moved all the way back to November, much to the rage of fans everywhere. To add insult to injury, the date was again pushed back by an additional 3 weeks, and as any GT fan can testify, they were some long weeks... The Result: With such a long wait, expectations were sky-high that this would be the definitive Gran Turismo game...which it totally wasn't. A competent racer, sure, but there were numerous areas in which gamers felt short-changed, most blatantly that though the game featured just over 1000 cars, only 200 of them were "premium" models rendered properly, whereas the other 800+ were simply upscaled from the previous game. Then there was the clunky menu navigation, which was a huge pain to get through quickly, and the disappointingly long loading times, even if you gave the game a full install. Then there's the stupid paint chips system, by which point I was exasperated enough to just start playing Forza instead. It's probably the best game on this list, but still a monument to failed promise.
