4. Fortnite - The King Of Battle Royale

Fortnite - Title
Epic Games

While there are many battle royale games to choose from, there is one that rose above all the others and is seen as an example as to how profitable they can be.

Despite it originally being a fortress building multiplayer game where players would fight off hordes of zombies, Fortnite quickly jumped aboard the battle royale hype train and never looked back. It was even able to implement its building mechanics into the battle royale mode to make it stand out amongst the crowd and its bright and approachable appearance made it appealing to a much wider audience.

In 2019, it was confirmed that the game had made over $2 billion in microtransactions and that by early 2020 the player count had exceeded 350 million. The game has even gone on to become widely successful outside of gaming, mostly thanks to its popularity among celebrities and streamers such as Drake, Marshmello and Ninja.

Time will tell whether or not Fortnite will remain the most popular battle royale game, but what is certain is that the battle royale game mode is here to stay and will be a key selling point for many future multiplayer games.
