3. The Evil Within

With Resident Evil having long since gone off the survival horror rails, the brains behind the brilliant fourth entry, Shinji Mikami, sought to recapture some of that old magic with The Evil Within.

Granted, he didn't quite succeed, because the game is more Grindhouse, big-dudes-with-chainsaws, and rooms-inexplicably-filled-with-lethal-sawblades than any Resident Evil game or survival horror I've ever seen. But get over that hump, and you'll find that for all its lack of subtlety, it's a veritable gory-hole of a game.

The creature designs are brilliant, the shooting mechanics crunchy and satisfying, and there are even a couple of cheap yet effective jump scares thrown in for good measure. It's about as subtle as chucking a human into a wood-chipper, but nonetheless one of most enjoyable horror romps around.
