Teetering on the border between this generation and the last, Wolfenstein: The New Order wasn't exactly shrouded in hype, perhaps because of the forgettable nature of its predecessor and expectations that it'd be kind of generic.

But in the trusty hands of Bethesda, the venerable shooter series went through a beautiful revival, featuring innovative shooter mechanics and an excellent story set in an alternative-history '60s world where the Nazis won World War II.

For the first time, BJ Blazkowicz has actually been endowed with some personality too, showing a tender (and raunchy) side alongside his ability to cut throats and take Nazi names. The Dieselpunk aesthetic looks fantastic, and travelling around a formidable, metallic Nazi-occupied Europe is just as thrilling as it would be in real life...

... because that would be fun, right?
