12 Most Underrated Video Games Of This Console Generation (So Far)
11. Alien: Isolation
When it was revealed that the new entry in the waning Alien franchise was to be a survival horror inspired by the original movie, it was hard to believe whether we should trust SEGA, or laugh them off ("What? In the same way as Colonial Marines was inspired by Aliens? Ha. Haha. HAHAHAHAHA").
But no one was laughing when Alien: Isolation arrived, because it was tense, terrifying, and unpredictable, as you'd spend countless minutes hiding under beds or in lockers, waiting for the stalking, procedurally-spawning alien to go by, before making a run—sorry, crouch-walk, for it.
Strangely however, sales weren't much better than Colonial Marines (though still decent), and critical opinion was decidedly split, perhaps because cowering and hiding don't fit traditional models of video game 'fun'.
It's the kind of game that horror fans will love and horror-phobes will loathe. It was a brave move to take a mainstream genre in such a niche direction, but it worked incredibly well, and if you want to encourage more creativity in the AAA industry, then it's your moral duty to buy it.
