10. This War Of Mine
Hey, want to play a game about war? No, you don't get to gun down swathes of faceless soldiers. No, helicopters don't crash into buildings, sending shardy showers of glass onto your head. And no, you won't feel like a hero while playing it.
This War of Mine is a tough sell in a games industry with a very blunt status quo of what 'war' is. It's a survival game in which you control a group of people trying to survive a siege in a fictional Balkan town inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo.
It's bleak, beautiful, and confronts you with heart-rending questions like: should you steal food from the elderly couple to look after your own? How many innocent people are you prepared to rob or kill? Is co-operating with strangers worth the risk in such dangerous times?
It's powerful, profound stuff, and one of the best examples of games as commentary on 'Sh*t that Actually Matters'.
