6. Protagonists Have Blurred Into One
There’s a delicate balance that has to be struck with the main characters of the series. Owing to circumstances, they can’t be carefree scamps who skip through meadows, pick flowers and just wish that the Summer could last forever.
This isn’t Barney the Dinosaur: The Video Game. Protagonists in this series spend much of their time in the criminal underbelly of their respective cities, committing some distinctly shady deeds.
With all of this in mind, we’ve still got to root for them. Care for them. Want them to succeed. To achieve this, Rockstar usually gives the player rather extensive backgrounds to their protagonists, explaining how they came to be in the situation they’re in.
This is all well and good, but these very similar threads can make their stories feel a bit repetitive. Trevor was one example of a character who tried to break out of a rather predictable pattern, and Rockstar went way over the top in the process.
GIving the game a trio of main characters gave the impression that the team were trying a little too hard to highlight their differences. A single truly unique and creative character or arc would alleviate the need for this.
