12 Ridiculous Video Game Movies You Didn't Know Were Happening
8. Gran Turismo
The Game: Arguably the greatest racing video game series of all time and renowned for its beautiful visuals and grounded, realistic approach to driving, Gran Turismo touts itself as "the ultimate racing simulator", far away from the cartoonish crashes and outlandish physics of other entries in the genre. The Movie: Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti (The Social Network) are producing the project for Sony, while Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) is in talks to direct, and Alex Tse (Watchmen) will co-write the script with Kosinski. Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi suggested the premise will follow a gamer who becomes a racer for real. Why It's Ridiculous: For starters, that's an absolutely terrible premise, and secondly, if there's any racing series which really doesn't need an adaptation, it's this. With Need for Speed, Burnout, Forza Motorsport and even freaking Driveclub being much more ripe concepts for a movie, this is pretty much just going to be a film completely different to the game, simply appropriating its title for the brand identity it generates.
