12 Ridiculous Video Game Movies You Didn't Know Were Happening

9. Asteroids

The Game: A certified classic from the golden age of arcade games, Asteroids is simple but brilliant: you control a spaceship stuck in an asteroid belt, having to fend off both flying saucers and asteroids flung at you for as long as possible. The Movie: Universal Studios obtained the rights in 2009, with Matt Lopez (Race to Witch Mountain, The Sorcerer's Apprentice) writing the script, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) produces. The premise will be an original concept, revolving around two brothers who team up to prevent an alien invasion, while over the last few years David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) and Jez Butterworth (Fair Game) have also taken passes at the script. Why It's Ridiculous: The game has such a basic, elemental concept that it's difficult to believe the final film will much resemble it. Bonaventura insists that the entire movie will indeed take place in the asteroid belt, but time will tell.
