13 More Horror Themed Video Games To Play On Halloween

6. Alan Wake

Alan

Speaking of generally spooky environments, Alan Wake features a town that could be compared to bizarre metropolis Twin Peaks. The game throws you directly into a thriller akin to the works of mastermind Stephen King.

The plot of the game follows title character Alan Wake - a psychological thriller novelist - as he attempts to vacation with his wife, Alice, and overcome a two-year stretch of writer's block. Things begin to take on an eerie tone when Alan's wife is dragged into the lake by an unseen force. He eventually awakens a week later with amnesia and must fight shadowy figures and uncover secrets of the town in order to piece together his memory and save his wife. Part of what makes the game so interesting is the way the lead character ties in directly to the sequences of the game. A being known as the Dark Presence uses writers to warp their fiction into reality making the game entirely self-involved.

Like Silent Hill, you'll experience foggy environments that you must traverse in the dark making Alan Wake perfect to play on a dark, October night. The story is original and will draw you in while the episodic format leaves you wanting more. Alan Wake is like a television show that you can't stop watching - the more horror you experience the more obsessed you become. A spin-off was released titled Alan Wake's American Nightmare which strays heavily from the moody, ambient feel of the first game. A true sequel is currently in the works and will continue the story as a second season to the Alan Wake series.
