13 Infamous Mis-Steps That Ruined Iconic Gaming Characters
8. Alex Kidd Wasn't Up To Being A Mascot
Disney have Mickey, Warner Bros have Bugs and so it was only natural when video games came into existence that gaming companies would also come up with recognisable company mascots. Super Mario became the first video game character to rival Mickey and soon Sega wanted a piece of the action. Sonic The Hedgehog would become the biggest rival to Mario and helped Sega battle Nintendo throughout the 16-bit era in a closely fought battle, but he wasn't Sega's first mascot. Sonic's coolness, and incredibly popular game saw the hedgehog usurp Sega's previous flagship character Alex Kidd. Alex Kidd is now most famously known as the guy Sonic replaced, and it could be argued that his fall from grace wasn't because of any particular misstep. Instead it can be said that Alex Kidd never earned his spot as Sega's mascot in the first place - he was only there because Sega had yet to come up with anything good. His really misstep is that he was given the ball but didn't run with it.
