13 Infamous Mis-Steps That Ruined Iconic Gaming Characters
6. Perfect Dark Zero
Once upon a time Nintendo gave us the best home for shooters. Games like Turok, Quake and of course Goldeneye 007 made the N64 the place to gather around and blast your friends with a head shot. If Nintendo had known how successful Goldeneye would have been they would have probably done a deal to secure the rights to more than one James Bond film so they could have seen Tomorrow Never Dies developed by Rare as a N64 exclusive. Without Bond, Rare could only follow up Goldeneye with a spiritual successor to the game. In one sense this was a good thing, as even if they had Bond for longer, it would only be a matter of time before they no longer controlled the rights to their premier FPS franchise. Perfect Dark gave Nintendo and Rare the opportunity to create their own franchise, which with the same gameplay of Goldeneye would surely become the greatest FPS series ever. Perfect Dark required the Nintendo 64 expansion pack for most of its game modes, and just like any game that requires extra peripherals the sales weren't as high as they could have been. Perfect Dark was a much more polished and refined Goldeneye, but sold less. Then it all went really wrong for Joanna Dark. A tiny teaser for a Perfect Dark game was shown for the GameCube, but Rare was sold to Microsoft. The original Xbox didn't get the long rumoured Perfect Dark Zero and throughout this console's lifespan Halo and Master Chief became the rulers of the console FPS space. Still all hope was not lost. The original Perfect Dark and Goldeneye still held a lot of weight in the FPS world so it was an easy choice to launch the Xbox 360 with Perfect Dark Zero as its main launch title. The game wasn't developed by the same Rare who made either of their previous shooters and the game simply wasn't as good and certainly wasn't the Halo beater everyone expected it to be. And since it was no Halo beater, Microsoft simply decided to not beat Halo and have continued to continue with Halo as their flagship FPS and leave Joanna in the dark.
