Returning to the first game's protagonist and setting (Frank West and Willamette, Colorado), DR4 retains the same open-world carnage of prior titles though does away with the irritating countdown timer which has always felt at odds with the addictive, go-nuts zombie slaughtering gameplay.

DR4 feels like it's focusing more on fun than ever, what with firework-crossbows, power armour that lets you tear lampposts out of the ground, and more fluid weapon-switching allowing for more silky smooth destruction than ever before.

With the glut of self-serious FPS titles and whatnot hitting stores in time for Christmas, here's a game that seems to emphasise sheer, unadulterated, silly joy above all else.
