13 Video Games To Play On Halloween (That Aren't Horror-Themed)

12. The Super Mario Series

Marioboo

Speaking of Mario, the Party franchise isn't the only game to haunt this list. In fact, the main series games are what inspired Mario Party to do it's own monster mash. From the beginning, Super Mario Bros. featured dark, underground caverns and lava-ridden castles for the player to explore. Talk about spooky! As the series progressed, and new ghoulish characters were introduced, this theme was expanded upon most notably in Super Mario World. The castles Mario explored now featured a gallop of ghosts that would follow Mario when he had his back turned. Occasionally the player would come up against a larger Boo who went on to become a staple in the series. Super Mario 64, known by many as the greatest Mario game of all time, brought the creepy atmosphere back with a vengeance. Rather than just a castle or haunted house, Mario could now explore a full environment ridden with ghastly creatures. Upon defeating a Boo they would leave a message for our hero: "Boos... don't... die. Can you get out of here... alive?" The occasional creepy environment would go on to feature in later Mario games but none so prevalently as in Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. Luigi's Mansion, a spin-off of the series, centers around this theme completely and is also a must-play for anyone with a love of the supernatural.
