9. Pyre

Supergiant Games' (Bastion, Transistor) third title to date defies just about all expectations, not merely following in the footsteps of their two prior games, but ambitiously merging RPG mechanics with a central rugby-esque 3v3 battle system.

That's right: Pyre is a sports game at its core, a sports game with a gorgeous art-style, charming characters and an intriguing narrative, but a sports game all the same.

The matches, known as Rites, drive the plot forward and, while initially incredibly easy, soon enough ramp up in difficulty as repeat opponents learn from their prior mistakes and employ more complex manoeuvers to try and outfox you.

While it can be argued that the spine of the game is as such a little repetitive, it's so beautiful to behold and so different from anything else out there that it's hard to care all that much.
