11. It's Too "Edgy" For Its Own Good - Rage 2

Rage 2

Despite the fact that Rage 2 hits stores in less than two months, the hype feels oddly muted, which may speak to the perception among some that Bethesda's open-world shooter sequel looks a bit too edgy and "try-hard" for its own good.

Ever since the first teaser trailer dropped, Rage 2 has faced an uphill struggle appealing to anyone beyond hormonal teenage boys, but in fairness, hands-on gameplay previews have generally fared far more positively.

Even if the gunplay is tight, though, Rage 2 will live or die on whether or not millions of players actually want to spend dozens of hours with its aesthetic. And this is what could cause it to become a commercial bomb (to say nothing of its critical reception).

Rage 2 is certainly a bold Hail Mary pass for a "franchise" nobody ever really expected to be one, but its exuberant style also implies a certain feeling of desperation which could deter potential customers while also leaving critics exhausted.
