4. Death Stranding

The first new franchise from Hideo Kojima since 2001's Zone of the Enders - and even that was restricted to two instalments as Konami promptly sent him back to work on more Metal Gears.

Not that the magnificent Metal Gear Solid franchise isn't worth every second of its dev-time, but Death Stranding is already breathing with a level of unrestrained oxygen-savouring freedom that proves Hideo had plenty of other ideas ready for years.

Even at time of writing we have no idea what it's really about - save for exploring the idea of time, ageing and death stopping, throwing a band of characters and creatures into alternate dimensions of eldritch horror where they must contend with what appear to be manifestations of mortality itself.

Whatever Death Stranding really is, it's a few years off. And even then, Hideo Kojima will likely keep his cards close to his chest until he's forced to reveal them.
