Now, two years later, over fifteen million players (as of July 2020) have set sail in this colourful sandbox to forge their own memorable adventures. And with the game releasing on Steam earlier this year, there’s been more new players than before voyaging for the first time.

As tempting as it can be to grab some of the many colourful barrels that you’ll see on your travels for some extra loot – especially the rarer and more valuable varieties – doing so is often a deadly mistake. Should a stray cannonball, bullet, lightning bolt, or anything else strike in the barrel’s vicinity, then it’s likely your ship and all the loot onboard will be making an express trip to the bottom of the sea.

Moreover, knowledgeable players know to scope out other ships for gunpowder barrels to make sinking their targets easier, with the crow’s nest being the first place they’ll look. It turns out that wooden ships and explosives don’t go well together.

There are some tactical locations to store gunpowder barrels depending on your ship type; but all that will do is slightly lower your chances of the inevitable happening.
