15 Advanced Tips To Survive In Sea Of Thieves

14. Sails Up, Anchor Up

Being a pirate game centred on naval combat and exploration, understanding how to sail a ship effectively is one of the first things new sailors will need to learn. Raising anchor and lowering the sails are simple enough to get underway. But stopping, on the other hand, can take a little more getting used to.

Your first guess on how to stop your ship before the island you’re about to hit stops it for you is to lower the anchor.

And while this will certainly stop your ship from moving when you need to disembark for whatever reason, it also puts you at a massive disadvantage against other players by making you a sitting duck. By the time you’ve got back on board and raised the anchor, the other crew could’ve done some serious damage.

An easier solution to this problem is to stop your ship by raising the sails instead of lowering the anchor. Your ship won’t sail without any sails, after all. Though it’ll take some practice to get the timing right, having the ability to pull the sails down and leave at a moment’s notice will get you out of many sticky situations.
