15 'Always Online' Games That You Can't Play Anymore

MAG Massive Action Game

Massive Action Game, or MAG for short, is a long-forgotten PS3 exclusive buried in the sands of time, seemingly never to be recovered again. A first of its kind, MAG was a massive multiplayer online FPS game that was famous for hosting up to 256 players in one match. When this was released back in 2010, those player counts were unheard of for a console release.

Developed by Zipper Interactive, which was famous for the highly rated and sorely missed SOCOM games, MAG was a rare type of FPS that really tried to push boundaries in the console space. Sure, now everybody is used to MMO FPS games like Destiny, but back in 2010, we were in uncharted territory.

The game mode that made the game famous was Domination. We all know how this mode goes by now: capture a point on the map, hold it for as long as you can. Now, imagine that, but with 256 players, four platoons (which consisted of four 8-player squads) and a huge map split into four sections that unlock as the game goes on. Sounds fun, right?

However, the fun didn't last, with servers ultimately shutting down in 2014. Zipper Interactive closed its doors in 2012, and MAG no longer had the juice to fight off competitors such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, making its massive 256-player lobbies increasingly difficult to fill.

Hey, I’m Matt. I work full-time at WhatCulture's neighbours, MyVoucherCodes. I first joined MyVoucherCodes as a Deals Expert, scouring the internet, leaving no stone unturned in finding the best discount codes, sales and offers for our customers. Moving into my first home during the worst possible time (during lockdown), I understand the necessity of saving money when the purse strings are tight. Outside of saving money, I’m into video games, movies, books and music. I host and edit a video game podcast called The Retry Hard Podcast, where my friend and I go through news, reviews and video games in general. I love movies and watching how they’re made, and I’ve worked as a set decorator for a few months on His Dark Materials season 3, which gave me a massive insight into how it all comes together. I also put out music as a solo artist named Matt Kiano, where I won the award for Best Male Artist of 2025 for Radio Wigwam and have been nomiated for Best Live Act at the 2026 Radio Wigwam Awards.
