11. Ori And The Blind Forest

There have been plenty of impressive 2D platformers this generation, but none have quite matched the quality of Ori and the Blind Forest.

The game oozes atmosphere, thanks primarily to the simple-yet-effective visuals. Any single still from the game looks like an oil painting, but it's all playable, and these charming, Studio Ghibli-like character designs mesh well with the rich, Earthy backdrops.

It's the lighting that makes Ori so memorable and striking though. Even in the image above, the way the sun beams through the forest and into the water gives the environment such a lush colour gradient, and this approach to light, shadow and colour defines the entire art style, with the developers constantly finding new ways to present familiar environments in original ways.
