15 Best New Video Game Franchises Of The Decade
7. Fortnite
Mentioning Fortnite around 'hardcore' gamers instantly inspires tirades about how the game is the worst thing of all time and actively destroying the industry and probably culture as a whole and also probably the entire world, somehow.
And yes, it is true that the title has inspired absolute abominations like 'flossing' and wears its abject commercialism on its sleeve, but Epic's shooter is also one of the biggest phenomenons of the decade for good reason.
Though nobody cared about the original PVE version of the game, the Battle Royale spin-off had the perfect cocktail for success. It was free, it was jumping on a budding new genre before the biggest name in that scene had made it to consoles, and it boasted a cartoon art style that made it instantly visually appealing.
Still, it takes more than being in the right place at the right time to make a great franchise, and Epic should be commended for constantly updating the game and making it better, creating cultural touchstones through updates like the recently released Chapter 2.
