You just can't beat Pokémon, especially from a financial and business level. In terms of game mechanics, Game Freak knocked it clean out the park and into a nearby martian with the original Red and Blue releases, every subsequent instalment needing only to tweak minor features in the grand scheme of things. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were the reworks of 2002's originals, albeit it done up and reworked to include all the newer trimmings of the interceding releases. That meant a new battle system, Mega-Evolves, X & Y's graphics engine and of course, a host of new Pokémon to complete your collection. As a testament to just how popular the base formula is to this day, Nintendo released the original trio on 3DS in February 2016 with zero alterations other than wireless multiplayer, just because they can. Now THAT, is testament to a formula that sells well.
