15 Best Video Games Of The Year (So Far)

11. Outlast

With Resident Evil completely losing its identity and turning into another stop n' pop cover shooter with part six two years ago, The Baton Of Horror was passed down to first-person exploration titles that take away any emphasis on combat and instead present nightmarish creatures to you, with no recourse other than to run like the clappers in the opposite direction. It was Slender Man that took this idea and crossed over to the mainstream thanks to a perfectly streamlined design and helped the likes of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Daylight and the upcoming Alien: Isolation all find suitable furores of hype, fandom and expectation. Over to Outlast though, and as PS4's flagship horror title it delivers on atmosphere in spades, placing you in the shoes of Miles Upshur; a journalist who receives a tip-off leading him to a dilapidated Mount Massive Asylum and the horrors within. Although the story itself goes down a polarising route of genetic experiments and overpowered beasties baying for your blood, Outlast's ace up its sleeve is the reliance on using Miles' camcorder night-function to explore the Asylum itself.
What is such a simple idea is perfect in its execution, being it's a tried and true horror staple - the old 'here's what was staring at you the whole time' thing - yet with the PS4's considerable graphical wallop it gives the entire game an undeniable sense of tension throughout, with some brilliantly twisted and memorable enemies along the way.
