2. Scalebound Gets Cancelled

PlatinumGames' action RPG Scalebound was announced back at E3 2014, and though player reception to the game was fairly mixed out of the gate, it was legitimately shocking that it ended up being cancelled in early 2017, with the rather blatant implication being that it simply wasn't up to the required standard.

Even so, with the Xbox One having so few exclusive titles on the horizon, quality or otherwise, it's surprising that Microsoft would straight-up ditch one that was clearly in a deep stage of development, rather than try to fix whatever wasn't working in it.

Of course, that's a major simplification of the various toils of game development, but even so, with Xbox One owners having so little exclusive content compared to the competition, this was a genuinely surprising, and possibly ill-advised, business move.
