5. Lords Of The Fallen

When it was first released, Lords of The Fallen was unfortunately labelled as nothing more than a Dark Souls rip off. Sure, the idea that a game should be expansive, open and challenging are all hallmarks of From Software's series, yet it's not like great games haven't taken inspiration from others before. In that way, this solid RPG perhaps caught more flack than it should have, and could be the reason many players didn't warm to the title as much as the Souls series it borrows so heavily from.

Which is a shame, because Lords of The Fallen acts as an entry into a sub-genre that's pretty much without competition at this point. With its distinctly different art style and preference for grandeur and affectations over the minimalism of Dark Souls' high fantasy aesthetic, this impressively detailed dungeon crawler stands as an intricate and satisfying hack and slasher in its own right.

Although it doesn't win many points for originality, Lords of The Fallen acts as a brilliant starting point for a new franchise going forward, or at the very least provides players with choice and variation in a sub-genre otherwise pretty much entirely monopolised by a single developer.
