Until P.T came along, Outlast was the scariest, most suspense-driven horror title you could find on next gen consoles. Although the title's gameplay will be admittedly familiar to fans of the genre, often tasking you with avoiding enemies while solving simple environmental puzzles, the game's sense of atmosphere and pacing more than made up for the rather run of the mill activities you often found yourself doing.

But the addition of one simple mechanic (the ability to use a home video camera for night vision) added an incredible amount of immersion and intensity to the clinched gameplay. Looking through the lens of a camera evokes classic horror themes, and the attention to detail in this visual style likens Outlast to contemporary found footage horror movies, a style which translates perfectly to the video game medium.

Its location and gameplay might be familiar to horror fans, but Outlast's sophisticated understanding of atmosphere and world-building more than makes up for any mechanical shortcomings.
