Last year marked a turning point for first person shooters; after being marred for years in the same bland, corridor, point and click nature of the "modern military shooter", the release of Wolfenstein: The New Order, Titanfall, and yes, even Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare all became reflective of a genre on the move to a more fast-paced, bombastic and inventive gameplay.

However, no game embraced the return to old-school tropes more than 2014's Shadow Warrior. Headed up by some of the developers who worked on the equally inventive and enjoyable Bulletstorm, this downloadable shooter set out to prove that old school FPS design still works in the modern day.

With a fast paced, kinetic focus and the ability to tear through enemies with a variety of weapons like swords, rocket launchers and shotguns with more barrels than you can count, the game played more like arena shooters of yore, completely condemning the modern military approach to the genre.

Boasting inventive enemies and a fair amount of imaginative and inspired locations, the action itself does feel a little repetitive now and again, but the weapons and the combat are so satisfying that the simple mechanics on show don't need to be any more complex than they have to be.
