15 Most Disappointing Video Games Since 2000

9. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

You had one job: More Solid Snake. Wait, put the pitchforks down, there is a method to this madness. Judging by the polarising effect mentioning MGS 2 in a group of gamers always has, it's safe to say there's a largely unspoken contingent of fans who are waiting to rant their eyebrows off at just how ludicrous the opening premise of Sons of Liberty actually is. This is thanks to creative overseer Hideo Kojima, who following one of the most positively received games in history alongside establishing the quote-worthy Solid Snake as one of the best new characters - then decided to replace him with a spindly, white-haired effeminate fop called Raiden. His justification behind doing so was to give the Snake character a completely different perspective, and the only way to do so was switch control over to someone who was the total opposite of what we wanted. Whether that's genius or not is up to you, but the thing that really cheesed people off was that Snake's short section in the game was actually completely missable if from the first menu screen you mentioned you hadn't played the first game. In addition to this if you happened to pick the wrong option, the game's lengthier chapter would open up with a masked Raiden being referred to by a certain codename. Yes, the codename was of course 'Snake', meaning Kojima was quite directly trolling people regardless of whether they 'unlocked' the first proper Snake mission or not. It was enough for some to be tarnished on the game right from the start, and as MGS 2's plot went off the deep end in terms of crazy characters and events, it's still a title that divides any who played back on release.
