4. Final Fantasy VIII
The suitably decent 7.3 that Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is currently showing
on imdb tells us that Square Enix can indeed make Final Fantasy movies that are well received. However it's still important to note that even in Japan the movie was straight to DVD and it got mixed reviews which
according to wikipedia pointed out that non FFVII players would likely be lost on the plot. This is the same kind of problem that would face a film version of FFVIII. Square Enix would be faced with either making a movie that would essentially be the same thing as the cut scenes from the game, or a sequel that only gamers can understand. If they did go the route of making a full movie out of the game, one of the bigger problems would be the plot, which is explain piecemeal throughout the 40+ hour experience. Try condensing that into a 2 hour theatrical experience without losing a lot of pacing. Better yet, save your time and don't try that. This is where we see another inherent difference in games and movies. Movies are limited to a certain amount of screen time, whereas games have as much time as the studio has funds and the player is entertained. Finally, imagine that you're pitching a Final Fantasy VIII movie to studio execs and investors. Now try to explain the entire plot in 3 or 4 sentences that don't run on... now try to imagine doing that in way that doesn't sound like it'd go over the heads of "joe and jane average".
