8. Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer
Rockstar

Before GTA Online completely took fans of Rockstar's open world mayhem by storm, many of the ideas were tried and tested in their previous smash-hit, Red Dead Redemption.

Being able to travel through the entire map with a band of merry outlaws, Red Dead's online suite made players see the main campaign's playground in an entirely different light, as you returned to familiar locations to take out bands of mercenaries or try your luck with sacking defended hideouts.

Combined with a wealth of standard PvP game modes that took advantage of the wild west theme (having to steal slabs of gold and return them to your base was particularly frantic and memorable) and you had an expansive mutliplayer offering that paved the way for GTA Online's world domination.

So considering just how well-rounded and satisfying the online portion of Red Dead Redemption was in 2010 (and how much fun it is to revisit from time to time now), then the sky's the limit when the next game hits late next year.
