From one style of RPG to another in a completely different vein, the first Xenoblade Chronicles (art of a larger, older RPG series called Xeno) was almost worth investing in Wii U hardware alone back in 2015; so complete and fully realised was its gorgeous world of city-sized monsters, Gundam-inspired mechs and real-time combat.

For the sequel, developers Monolith will first be rounding off the 'Blade trilogy' story-wise, but are taking some bold steps with the overall look of the game, as artist Masatsugu Saito is going for a 'chibi' aesthetic, featuring smaller character designs more in line with Dark Chronicle or Final Fantasy IX.

Gameplay-wise, 2015's Xenoblade Chronicles was a hearty mix of talking to alien races, exploring a humungous open world, battling scores of creatures and saving a number of planets, one mission at a time - all solid fodder for those looking for real substance and longevity to their RPGs.
