If there's one genre that feels right at home on a hybrid portable system, it's an old-school JRPG. And whilst we don't know a whole lot about Project: Octopath Traveler, its art style and initial trailer alone show a focused take on an 'old meets new' ideology.

Comprising wireframe meshes wrapped in 2D pixel art, Octopath's overall ethos feels like a callback to the sort of RPGs that emerged in the wake of Final Fantasy VII's runaway success. From its oppositional, turn-based combat encounters to all manner of tiny villages and oversized weapons, it's a timeless formula that even the new Zelda taps into on occasional.

Launch game, I am Setsuna has quickly become one of the Switch's most successful titles, coming from Square Enix setting up the aptly-named 'Tokyo RPG Factory' studio just to specialise in JRPGs. With any luck, this furtive movement - paired with enough eyes on something like Project: Octopath Traveler could point to the genre making a mainstream comeback.
