8. Halo 5: Guardians

2014 saw Microsoft have one of the roughest years of their career. Not only was the Xbox One flatlining and in desperate need of a pick-me-up, but the surefire saviour Master Chief Collection arrived in a state more broken than Arno Dorian's face. With Bungie out the picture (and sapping money left, right and centre with Destiny), it was over to fledgling fan-comprised studio 343 Industries to push forward. It turned out their grand design for the future of the series was to move away from the Master Chief entirely (eventually, anyway), and as such we've got Guardians, a tale that introduces newcomer Spartan Locke to proceedings, penning both him and the Chief on opposing sides of the story. Considering how bold some of the moves in Halo 4's campaign were (showing 343 wanted to make their own mark on the canon immediately) it bodes well for the series' future - but you have to ask yourself what the franchise can even be if you take away one of its most identifying factors, as well as move away from the overblown galaxy-saving stories we've become accustomed to. Would you buy a main instalment with the Chief sitting in the passenger seat, or with him omitted altogether? Let us know in the comments.
