3. 75% Of Resident Evil 2 Was Scrapped, Including A 'Conclusive' Ending

Yes, even the phenomenal Resident Evil 2 didn't exist in the form you know, until long into development. The original vision for Resi 2 reportedly had far more "boring" environments that Capcom's top brass rejected entirely, asking the dev team to completely throw away 75% of the assets already completed.

This resulted in a character swap from Elza Walker to Claire Redfield, a change in how many zombies could be rendered at once as Capcom wanted to push visual fidelity, actually resulting in less enemies but greater textures, and biggest of all, a 'conclusive' ending.

The story goes that Shinji Mikami wanted to end the series in a definitive manner, which Capcom simply couldn't and wouldn't allow, being they were only just beginning to milk their newfound cash cow.

All of the above was scrapped, and Resi 2 ended in a nicely open-ended way, so as to be extrapolated further into an entire world of titles.
