2. The Original Was Two Player... Until Capcom Realised The PS1 Couldn't Handle It

The PS1 did many things incredibly well, but for the most creative minds in entertainment, they had some ideas that just weren't possible at the time.

In a move that would later play out fully in Resident Evil: Revelations 2, the original Resi was set to be a co-operative experience, with you and a friend exploring the mansion in unison, tackling zombies, puzzles and everything else as a team. This is most likely why the game never featured a single protagonist, and why you still choose between Chris or Jill at the very beginning - the two of them would've made a solid duo.

Sadly, the PS1's hardware just wasn't strong enough to render two versions of the mansion at once, and the idea of a co-op Resident Evil was put on the backburner until Resident Evil 5.
