Where to start? Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

If you grew up in the west and were asked to name an RPG, chances are it would be Final Fantasy - but flip that global positioning around, and Dragon Quest would be just as important as something like Final Fantasy VII.

Because whether it's the stunning art design - headed up by Dragon Ball Z's Akira Toriyama - the turn-based battles, gorgeous worlds, fun enemies or expansive, mystical narratives, Dragon Quest is that 'type' of RPG we tend to talk about, yet the likes of mainline Final Fantasy is eons away from producing.

With Dragon Quest 11 right around the corner (and releasing on the Nintendo Switch), there's every chance the series may get a retrospective day in the sun, but if you're hankering for an RPG that knows exactly what it is and who it's for, that's Dragon Quest.
