15 Most Disappointing Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)
8. Fable 3
Microsoft's colourful RPG series, Fable, has never been a deep, stat-heavy experience but by weaving role-playing elements into an action-adventure game, developers Lionhead made something unique and interesting. Fable 3 stripped a lot of that away, streamlining the experience into a linear series of events. Criminally, many of the game's role-playing elements, like the experience driven upgrade system, were taken away. Instead, to acquire upgrades, players had to open chests on the Road To Rule, completely removing the player's ability to choose which upgrades to take and when. The majority of the game is spent building up revolutionary forces to take over the kingdom of Albion; the game builds up to this moment quite well. Then, when the player is finally King or Queen, the game turns into a boring series of black and white morality choices - build an orphanage for the poor children of Albion or send them back to work in the factories? It's all rather tedious. To call Fable 3 disappointing is a slight understatement - even series creator Peter Molyneux has distanced himself from the game, claiming he will never work with Microsoft again. Ouch. The charming world and sense of humour is still here, it's just a shame nearly everything else was stripped out.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
