4. Wolfenstein: The New Order

Speaking of gritty military shooters, everyone expected new studio MachineGames' take on this lore to fail spectacularly. However when your new studio is made up of ex-Starbreeze guys who previously worked on the unbelievably satisfying Riddick games and The Darkness titles, you just knew they were going to deliver.

The story beats are a bit all over the place tonally, going from a sometimes very subtle romance between BJ Blazkowicz and Anya to letting you grab twin miniguns and literally turn entire levels of enemies to paste, but it really doesn't matter if you're just looking for a new take on the age old 'Blast some Nazi scum!' plot line.

Overall it just handles so tightly, and when there are multiple paths through levels that'll reward you with bonuses if you take out certain enemies first - alongside a levelling up system you can tell publishers Bethesda threw in from Skyrim - the new Wolfenstein was one of the best shooters of last year, sadly buried underneath the controversy of Destiny and sheer might of Call of Duty.
