15 Video Game Sequels That Totally Defined Their Franchises

7. Star Fox 64

Although the first Star Fox blew everyone's collective lids back in 1993 thanks to being in three dimensions and Star Fox Adventures' re-skinning of Rare-original Dinosaur Planet was more like a weird Zelda mod, it was Star Fox 64 that's still the one people point to as one of Nintendo's many untapped franchises in desperate need of a sequel sooner rather than later. Not only were the graphics once again absolutely jaw-dropping for the time and the N64 itself, but the gameplay was instantly engaging and thoroughly rewarding in a perfectly refined way. Luckily like both Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, Nintendo did right be the series and up-ressed it to the 3DS too, reworking the graphics engine and fine-tuning the controls in a way that far, far more developers should take notice of. Oh, and for anyone who's ever heard the "Do a barrel roll" phrase through pop-culture (or typed it into Google and been blown away) then wondered where it came from? Right here.
