15 Video Game Sequels That Totally Defined Their Franchises
8. Red Dead Redemption
"What? Wasn't that the original game?" Surprisingly no, even though with Red Dead Revolver being such a different-looking and feeling title you'd be forgiven for thinking so. Instead, following Capcom's initial work it was Rockstar who came in later on after acquiring the IP to finish things off. Like L.A. Noire you can tell it's not their game through and through, and instead it was with Red Dead Redemption that they created not only a career highlight for an unbelievably talented development studio, but for plenty people what's regarded as their greatest game of all time. From the fantastic gameplay that instantly pulls you into every firefight to the affable and relatable John Marston who keeps getting dragged into yet another mishap before he can get back to his family, the philosophically-tinged dialogue that peppers his exchanges with the world's characters is some of the best writing in gaming history. All that's not to mention the ending, which if you've managed to avoid so far is a real treat. Not necessarily in a 'I didn't see that coming' sort of way, but more in the emotions it'll invoke and what it'll make you want to do to a certain character in the world - only to find out you can. With Red Dead Rebellion reported to be announced at this year's E3, this is the one title that really put the franchise on the map - remaining the only Rockstar-developed franchise some will take over GTA every time.
