The story of how Link: The Faces of Evil came to be is just as interesting as the game is itself.

Essentially Nintendo wanted a CD add-on for the SNES so they partnered with Sony to make it happen. Nintendo broke their agreement with Sony mid-way through the development of the new add-on, now partnering with Phillips to create the Super NES CD-ROM System. Sony would turn this add-on into a full console which became the PlayStation.

Yep, Nintendo's scummy business practices led to the creation of their main competitor.

Once the Sega CD underperformed, Nintendo bailed on the idea of a SNES CD add-on with Phillips as well but allowed them to make a few games using Nintendo characters as compensation.

So that's how we got the worst Zelda games ever made.

Link: The Faces of Evil is a side-scrolling action-adventure game most similar to something like Zelda II.

Whilst the game is often criticised for its abysmal cutscenes, they're easily the best part of the game. The game plays so badly that you'll be begging for a cutscene to happen so you can feel anything but frustration.

The cutscenes easily fall into so bad they're good territory, the gameplay is just bad.
