16 Horror Video Games You Must Play Before Halloween
9. Outlast
Continuing the first-person horror trend, PS4's Outlast is a masterclass in providing frights from the most subtle of things. The really great game mechanic here that personifies and brings the whole environment of a dilapidated asylum to life, is in using your camcorder's night-vision to illuminate the path ahead. All too often you'll be in a room devoid of light with only the surrounding elements such as dripping water, creaking walls and your character's own breathing for company, just to whip up the lens and unveil the horrors that were right in front of you the whole time. It ends up going off the deep-end with the believability aspect of the narrative - but if you're after a good story to get you through rather than just chasing thrills the real meat of the world is actually in the followup-release Whistleblower, telling the grisly details of what was going on at the asylum beforehand.
